Now the final aid work has ended but there are still funds from the TSUNAMI! –book that Raya Divers published. The book created about 19.000 euros and the final decision how to use these funds was made together with the group of doctors from Finland. They visited Khao Lak and together we went through all the possible ways to finalize our aid work.
We got information that there was a library donated to a local school. However, the library was missing one very important part – the books! So we decided to spend this 19.000 euros to fill up the brand new library.
Garry and his wife Mint had been to Bangkok and spent 3 three days hand picking all the books required from many different book stores. When all the book suppliers and book stores heard that the books were going to a school in Khao Lak they received discounts of 20% to 30% and even up to 70% at one shop where a large quantity of books was purchased. The books were in both English and Thai languages, their subjects ranged from many different sports, cooking, sewing, computers, science, with many general popular reading books. So with the Raya Divers donation, this library now has a great selection of books.

Thursday 16.11.2006
Garry Halpin, Dean Tollen and Sarah Schultz along with 2 Thai drivers with 2 vans and 1 car all fully loaded with books left Phuket and drove to Khao Lak at 7.30am,
They meet the Principle of The Watkommaneeyakhet School at 10.00am and made arrangements for some of the school children to help unload all the books. They had a tour around the school to meet all the rest of the school children. The children were all very excited seeing all the books they had brought with them.
The Canadian fund that built the library had donated some books as well and there was a system being put in place to record all the books on a computer with a bar code along with a return date control record on each book. There were still plenty of empty shelves for all the new books they had brought with them.
They had ordered some books the principle especially requested for the children’s computer studies and they were being delivered later for them as they needed to be printed. There was still money left over to buy more books so the principle asked can they also buy printing paper for the copy machine that Raya Divers had previously bought, also ink, tape, cardboard and plastic sheets to be able to make all the due back date control cards to be put in all the books for the library inventory. We also agreed to pay the salary for a librarian so the library will have a full time person controlling the books for the next years ahead. This school and the other schools in the Khao Lak area now has more facilities than most Thai public schools anywhere in Thailand, so all the aid work and donations everyone from Finland and other countries around the world has made a really big difference to the recovery and the start of a normal life again for a lot people in the Khao Lak area.
